God is With Us and For Us
January 11, 2026
The conflict between Pharaoh and Moses comes to a head in this week's passage. After nine plagues, God warns of one final plague that will befall Egypt—the death of the firstborn. Unlike the previous plagues, Israel must act in order for God to avert the plague from striking them as well. God promises to provide salvation for them through the death of a spotless lamb. God also commands the people of Israel to pass on this story to the coming generations so they will remember forever God's great deliverance. With the preparations made, God's destroyer comes and no household in Egypt is left untouched by death. In response to this devastating judgment, Pharaoh submits to God's will by allowing the people of Israel to go. After 430 years of bondage, they begin their journey to the land of God's promise. This passage displays God's greatest act of deliverance in the Old Testament. The Passover now provides the backdrop for us to understand the coming of the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
