Riches Can't Pay the Ransom
Series: Psalms of the Sons of Korah
Psalm 42-49 demonstrate a discernible order. They capture both the bewilderment and despondency of those times in the valley, but also reach glimpses of glory on the mountain top. Last week, we were anchored in the hope of the city of God, of God in Zion being our fortress. From the clarity of that peak, the Psalmist now offers wisdom to the entire world. Having begun with a downcast spirit, he now offers confident wisdom about a very real dilemma the people of God face in a fallen world. When cheated and oppressed by the rich and powerful, we shouldn’t be afraid. Death’s ransom will come due, sparing none. Riches will prove worthless. “But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me” (v. 15). In this, the Psalmist takes comfort. There is a coming new morning (v. 14).
