Contentment as Gain
Series: Rethinking the Church
Paul turns from urging the church to honor one another in the various relationships within the household of God to calling Timothy to confront these false teachers who are opposing the sound doctrine given by the apostle. This is the third and final description of false teachers in the letter (1:3-11; 4:1-5). He will call Timothy and all the members of the church to be aware of false teachers who are motivated by financial gain and greed. They use godliness for their own ends, which are material and financial. Paul shows the church a greater gain in true godliness which comes from the gospel. In the gospel, we are guarded from dangers and the temptations of living a life trusting in money.
