Ten Words

Israel's wanderings in the wilderness lead them to Mount Sinai, the "mountain of God" where Moses previously encountered God in the burning bush (Exodus 3). Here, God reveals Himself and His will to His people through the Ten Commandments. These commandments are the foundation of God's law and hold weight for Christians, as nine of the ten laws are reiterated in the New Testament as expected of followers of Jesus. The one exception is the strict practice of the Sabbath, because Jesus Himself is our Sabbath rest.

Though God's revelation of the law is for the good of all people, it remains powerless to save as it does not change the heart. Instead, the law is meant to show us our need for a Savior, who will bear the consequences of our sins and fulfill the law for us. Therefore, the Ten Commandments remain a charter of conduct for the redeemed to reflect both God's beauty and His grace to the world, as we joyfully respond in obedience to the salvation we have received by grace.
