Discipleship in Crisis Training

The word “crisis” seems to increasingly define our lives. Whether we're joking (or not) about having an existential or mid-life crisis, walking through the crisis and pain of trauma, struggling with family relationships, or trying to navigate the multiple public crises which have vied for our attention the past few years, we are repeatedly reminded that life is hard and complicated. And we are repeatedly faced with the question: where is God in this? How does he speak into these situations? What would it mean for us to encounter him in the challenging places in our lives?

Every other Wednesday this Spring, we'll gather to listen to a session from this past October's CCEF conference which focused on this idea of encountering God in the modern crises around us. We had a group of folks attend the conference in person and they were so impacted by it that we want to share it with others. We'll watch a session and then discuss it together. This opportunity is open to the whole church (and feel free to invite friends!). The first session will be Wednesday, January 19 at 7:00pm at the church. If you have any questions, email Bryan Launer

If you can commit to every session, that's great. If you can only come sporadically, that's fine too (although the first two meetings will be most important to understand the theme of the conference). We'll post the session topic in the description of each of the following events.

Plenary Session 1 – Modern Problems: A Counselor's View of Cultural Chaos (Alasdair Groves)

Description

Our problems today have new (often digital) costumes, but fundamentally they are not new problems. Humans have suffered and sinned under pressure from cultural chaos since the Garden of Eden. However, the combination of screens, domineering media voices, echo chambers and, above all, the dominant cultural narrative of unbridled individualism has led to a pandemic of unmoored souls. This opening session will examine the particular ways this cultural moment strains and tempts us, with a special focus on the need to redeem toxic independence and its toxic impact on community and technology.
