Worship Guide for October 10

October 08, 2021

Prepare for Sunday morning worship by using the guide below.

Luke 9:51-56

51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 And they went on to another village.

Summary: As Jesus finished his public ministry in Galilee, he set his face to go to Jerusalem where he knew that he would die to bear the penalty of sin. On the first stop of the journey, he entered a Samaritan village and was rejected, unable to stay with them because of longstanding religious animosity with the Jews. Zealous for Israel and eager for the new kingdom of God, James and John wanted to call down fire from heaven to wipe out the Samaritan village. Jesus, undeterred by the Samaritan's rejection, rebukes the disciples for their misunderstanding of the kingdom and continues toward Jerusalem. This passage displays Jesus' mission to bring salvation to all the nations as he journeys to Jerusalem for the sake of Jews & Samaritans who need his mercy.

Review and Apply

How does the resolve of Christ displayed in this passage encourage your faith?

What does it look like for the Christian to pick up their cross and follow Christ? What are the differences between his cross and our crosses?

Like the Samaritans, in what ways have you rejected Christ because you do not want to go the way that he is going (to suffering)?

Like James and John, have you ever defended Christ but not responded to someone the way that Christ would have you to respond (with mercy and grace)?

How do you view the nations? How would you like to grow in your love for the nations? How does the gospel reset our hearts for the nations?

How is the rebuke of Christ an act of mercy to James and John? How has Christ's word (lovingly) rebuked you recently?
