Once again, our service is canceled this week due to inclement weather, so we have provided a brief guide below to help you worship at home. Family worship can’t replace our weekly gatherings, but it is an opportunity to meditate on the Word and intentionally disciple your family (Joshua 1:8) and to draw near to God with a sincere heart (Heb.10:22) even if you are worshipping alone.
A few quick reminders on worshipping at home:
- Brief, intentional worship is better than distracted worship. God does not hear us because of the amount of our words, prayers, or songs (Matthew 6:7-8). Know your family's capacity and don’t feel the pressure to completely recreate the Sunday morning service at home if that is not possible.
- Ask good questions. Family worship allows us to discuss what we are reading in God's Word, and this guide will provide you with some questions to that end.
- Embrace the awkward. If you have never done this before, it may feel awkward singing, praying, and reading God's Word together in your home. But He calls us to seek Him daily, and this is an opportunity to do just that. Even if it feels awkward, trust that God's Word does not return void!
WORSHIP GUIDE
Sing - Begin worship with the songs below
Pray
- For our body: [Children in the church] Pray that they would grow up hearing and learning the things of God and that the Lord would draw them to Himself.
- For our region: [Trinity Park Church and Interim Pastor John Thomas] Pray for their church, their search committee, and their candidates as they search for a new senior pastor.
- For our missions partners: Pray for The International Mission Board as they seek to help churches equip and support missionaries who will bring the gospel all around the world.
Read - Read John 2:1-11 aloud
Summary - Read this aloud together
John’s Gospel explicitly tells us what it is written for near the end. John 20:30-31 says, “30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” In John 2 we get the first of the “signs” that Jesus did – turning water into wine. This is the first miracle recorded in John’s Gospel and somewhat surprisingly Jesus doesn’t make a big deal of it. In fact, we don’t have anything about how Jesus responded or how he used it as an opportunity to teach. The only commentary we get comes with the reaction of Jesus’ disciples: they believed. As you listen to the sermon below, consider the character of Jesus and afterward use the questions provided to reflect on Jesus’ love and care.
Listen - Listen to this 15:00 meditation on John 2:1-11.
Questions - These are for family worship! Feel free to ask your kids these questions as well.
- How much do you think about the miracles of Jesus? Do you have a favorite miracle?
- Why do you think Jesus did his first miracle at a wedding (as opposed to a synagogue or other religious gathering space)?
- What about this miracle is surprising to you?
- What does this passage reveal about Jesus’ mission?
- How does this passage challenge your faith?
Sing - After going through the questions, sing one more song
Pray - Close with a prayer asking the Lord to embed these truths in your heart.
