Worship Guide for October 3

September 30, 2021

Prepare for Sunday morning worship by using the guide below.

Galatians 3:1-9

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Summary: Paul, finishing his report on the conflict with Peter, turns back to the Galatian churches. Paul is addressing a drift from the gospel. Following these false teachers, these Galatian churches added to the gospel additional works necessary for becoming right with God and each other. They became Christians through faith in Jesus, believing him to be the suffering servant, dying on a cross bearing the sins that separated them from God. They bought into a distorted gospel that was dangerously close to adding godly efforts to the cross of Jesus as essential to being in fellowship with God and others. Paul, using their own experience with the Spirit of God and the scriptures, proves the foolishness of their ways.

Review and Apply

How were the believers bewitched?

How are these questions showing the error of their thinking?

What additions, subtractions or adjustments have you made to the gospel?

What person have you invited to bring needed correction if necessary?

How do you see the presence of the Spirit in your life?

Why does Paul use Abraham as an example and not Moses?

How does this passage teach that the plan of salvation is the same in the OT and NT?
